Earlier this year, Marketwired
showcased the growing market for meat alternatives, stating that alternative protein sources are “poised to accelerate, potentially claiming up to a third of the protein market by 2054.”
Because of this growing movement away from meat, more and more companies are offering delicious plant-based alternatives with a texture and taste that make them virtually indistinguishable from their cruel and wasteful animal-based counterparts.
Now, a new article by Food Navigator
explains, “Sensing a shift in consumer eating habits and attitudes, several German meat companies are leading the way in innovation and new product development for meat substitutes.”
You read that right. German meat companies are investing in vegetarian meat alternatives. And it should come as no surprise.
This June, a study found that young German consumers are increasingly interested in animal welfare and the environment, which is reflected in their decreasing meat consumption. In fact, up to 15 percent of 16- to 24-year-old Germans consider themselves vegetarian, and 18 percent in this age range purchase meat alternatives.
The article makes clear that this trend isn’t limited to the United States and Germany, reporting that “Mintel data suggests that one in eight UK shoppers is keen to replace half of their meat purchases for vegetable protein, while researchers at the University of Wageningen found that 75% of Dutch consumers had at least one meat-free day per week.”
